What can I do to help your child achieve success? Every one can achieve, we just have to figure out together where the roadblocks are. Then together we try different strategies and compensations until we find the right fit for the student. Doing this as a team helps alleviate fear and frustration, allowing us to move forward with confidence. Hopefully, we will have some fun along the way.
I have a bag full of strategies accumulated over 25 years of teaching and tutoring. As my school’s Literacy Leader, I received monthly trainings over several years in reading, comprehension, and writing strategies. These techniques have drastically improved my ability to help struggling students develop reading skills which they can apply in any content area class to improve their success. For example, the skill of questioning as you read will help a student engage in the subject matter, weigh and evaluate the information, and make determinations in any content area.
As a student majoring in Secondary Education/History/English, I realized that the key to student success lay in the ability to read, comprehend, and evaluate the material. So, even though my ultimate goal was to teach History, I took every reading strategies class my school offered. How could my students understand and learn from History if they could not read and evaluate the material? I painfully remember my own struggles with math, especially Algebra. I never wanted my students to feel as hopeless with me as I had felt in Algebra.
It is truly wonderful to share these strategies and see the joy, relief, and pride in a student’s smile.
